- Parks Highway | AK Boondocking
If you are looking for a quick, free overnight near Denali National park, there are several pull outs along Parks Highway that are perfect for just that. Most are just off the highway so there will be a bit of traffic and it won't be super private but we found it fit the bill for just passing through. The GPS location below is the exact one we stayed in right next to the river. AT A GLANCE Location : 63.519569255456275, -148.80308135788704 Length We Stayed : 1 night Solitude : Not super private Services : none T-Mobile Coverage : none ATT&T Coverage : some Time of year we stayed: June This area is absolutely stunning. We enjoyed the sound of the rushing water overnight and the traffic really died down at night. In the morning we were super close to Denali National Park and took the RV with us as there was plenty of parking there. - Exit Glacier Rd NF | AK Boondocking
Exit Glacier Road is just outside of Seward and is really the only boondocking area near town. The road is only open during the summer and has several pull out spots along it. The first big one is not open to overnight parking but the others are. It's not super private but it is convenient for an overnight stay. We ended up staying in one of these pull offs for two nights in a row but left with our rig and went into town rather than leave it there during the day. AT A GLANCE Location : 60.166101, -149.498425 Length We Stayed : 2 nights Solitude : Not super private Services : none T-Mobile Coverage : none ATT&T Coverage : none Time of year we stayed: July More Info: https://freecampsites.net/#!213355&query=sitedetails There is a wide open space next to the river with a very narrow entrance. If you can fit (we did with our 37 foot travel trailer but it was pretty tight) there is plenty of room and you'll be surrounded by beauty. We saw a few tent campers and one other small trailer. The GPS point should take you to the entrance. As mentioned before, there are also other pull offs. Some are paved and just right next the road and some are spots you can back into if you have a smaller rig. - Crossing Canada While Border is Closed
Getting a contract in Anchorage Alaska as a Travel Nurse wasn’t easy but there was another hurdle we had to jump - getting across the closed Canadian Border. There were many hoops to jump through and a lot of information to wade through. We've decided to compile it here. This is based on our experience crossing through Coutts, Alberta en route to Alaska at the end of May 2021. Laws change quickly so they may differ. At the time of this posting, the border closure has been extended through July 21st, 2021 but could continue after that as it has already been pushed each month for several months in a row. Canada has been closed to non essential travelers since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020. We know there are so many family members who have not been able to visit their loved ones on both sides of the border. It is not our intent to get political, brag, or complain when sharing this. Our hope is that it might be helpful for other essential travelers needed to cross while the border remains closed. Items Required Due to Covid: A copy of the essential employment contract If traveling with a family, a letter from the employer stating exactly who is traveling with the employee. We are not certain who qualifies but as we live in our RV we were allowed to travel together. We needed each person's name listed in the letter. Anyone over the age of 5 needs a negative Covid test within 72 hours of crossing so it would need to be timed just right. You can only cross at a handful of locations. We chose Coutts because we hadn’t had a chance to explore Montana yet and hoped that we could do so on our way up. You can cross anywhere coming back into the US. We were expected to complete the AriveCan App within 72 hours of crossing. We were told we would need to present an itinerary of how we intended to go and where we would stay. They, however, did not ask to see it. In addition to the Covid rules, there was of course the standard crossing rules as well. Passports (Our Kids passports were expired! If you are entering by land or sea, kids under 16 only need proof of citizenship which can be done with a birth certificate.) Pets would need a certification from a vet of recent rabies vaccination. The vet we visited in Butte said that we may need an International Health Certificate which must be done by a veterinarian with a special license. After another call to the Border, we found that this was unnecessary. We could not bring in any fresh produce, a limited amount of alcohol, or unopened dog food with certain ingredients. We opted to have a fresh unopened bag of food and some cans of food with us so that none was opened but Cinder would have plenty after we crossed. Since my Jeep was brand new I also need proof of registration. We recommend checking out all the details on Canada's website . Although the officials at the border were not the friendliest, we had a good experience calling with our questions. Restrictions while traveling through: You must display the windshield tag at all times and return it along with the official transit document to the other border by the deadline. Must take the most direct route and stick to it. May not enter any business. Pay at the pump, use drive-thru's, grocery pickup, or room service if in a hotel Must respond to daily inquiries about how you are feeling Must cross in the time allotted. Each Province may impose it's own rules. We were surprised at the Yukon Border with a 24 hour time limit to cross the Yukon alone. If you break down or cannot make your deadline you must have documentation in the form of receipts to prove it. Penalties for being found off route or inside a business could result in fines, arrest, and deportation. Watch our full episode here:
- Choteau City Park | MT Boondocking
We are starting to love City Parks. Yes, it is a small fee of $10/night be we found it worth it. There is water (even at some of the sites) and dump available, trash dumpsters, playground, frisbee golf, and a cute little coffee house one block over. There was even a grocery store across the street. We truly enjoyed our 3 nights here. Well, until the snowstorm hit! - Freezeout Lake WMA | MT Boondocking
This boondocking spot had some of the most amazing "Big Sky" sunsets and loads of birds. We enjoyed solitude here and while a few people drove by, we never had a camper park near us. We were able to run our generator to work and not bother anyone. The only downfall was the bugs! We aren't sure if it was mosquitos or a kind of gnat but they were EVERYWHERE! - Clear Creek Canyon | UT Boondocking
We found this location by accident as we were following directions from a spot on free campsites. It was clear others have camped here as there was a fire ring and the pullout was nice and big making it big rig friendly. We stayed here one night as we made our way up north. The only downside is there was sheep poop everywhere! But the bubbling creek, solitude, and a little bit of cell service made this a much better option than the Walmart parking lot. - Homestake Pass | MT Boondocking
We absolutely loved this area! There are tons of places to park all along the road, just depends how far you are willing to go in. You can all the way to the lake if you want. The farther you go, the less cell service there is though. We were able to get our 37 foot travel trailer pretty far and found a lovely spot in the forest to claim as ours for a week. - Paria River BLM | Utah Boondocking
This was a little scary to drive to at night but in the morning we were blessed with an incredible view. We were alone as it was kind of cold and gloomy but I'm sure this place gets used a lot. Just keep to the right past the entrance to the BLM office. We went up to the gravel pit area and the kids enjoyed playing on the rocks. - The Ray and Donna West RV Park | TX Boondocking
Alhough this isn't technically boondocking, it IS a rare opportunity to stay somewhere with FULL HOOKUPS for FREE! We were blown away by this generous park located in Muleshoe Texas. We stayed here for one night on our way to Phoneix for our second winter. There is a three-day limit but you will find 30/50 amp power, water, and sewer at each site. - Lake Holbrook County Park | TX Boondocking
Making our way across Texas was a feat! We found some pretty great boondocking spots luckily. This one is a county park and has some pretty awesome spots! Just DON'T park at the boat ramp. Haha! We arrived late and could not see the spots so we stayed in the boat ramp parking lot only to wake up boxed in by angry fisherman on a Saturday morning. It was a little chilly to swim but my bet is the swimming beach is a lot of fun in the summer. I'll include the freecampsites link but note the GPS is incorrect. We list the exact spot below. If you have trouble finding it, you can map to Holbrook Boat Ramp to help you get there. - Castle Hot Springs ST Trust | AZ Boondocking
In 2020 when the Pandemic hit, we escaped to this area to wait out the remainder of our contract for about two months. We bounced between several different spots. While this area is kind of out of the way, it was perfect for us. There were tons of trails to hike and ride our bikes. We saw wild donkeys and were close enough to the cute town of Wickenburg to get groceries away from the "big city." Be careful of parking at a trailhead though as on the weekends it does tend to fill up with horse riders and ATVers that don't care how close they park to you. A permit IS required and can be found HERE . It is $25/year for a family and you will need to print it and place it on your RV and in your Vehicles. - National Forest Near Sedona | AZ Boondocking
There are several spots located along 89 Highway between Cottonwood and Sedona. In fact, a local friend told us this area is known as "Main Street" because it is such a popular boondocking location. When we visited it happened to be on a beautiful holiday weekend and most of the "good" spots were taken already. We ended up going to an area just a little south of "main street." I'll leave both coordinates below.
