Who’s on Your Travel Nursing Team? Agency, Recruiter & Hospital Explained
Travel nursing may sound like a solo adventure, but you’re definitely not doing it alone.
⠀
Behind every assignment is a whole group of people helping you find the job, get qualified, make it through compliance, and eventually show up ready for your first shift.
⠀
And figuring out who does what can make the whole travel nursing process feel a lot less overwhelming.
⠀
So, who exactly is on your travel nursing team?
⠀
First Up: You’re the MVP
Before we talk about agencies or recruiters, let’s start with the most important person on the team:
⠀
You.
⠀
You’re bringing the nursing experience, skills, certifications, and licenses that make the whole thing possible.
⠀
One of the first things you’ll need to understand is where your nursing license allows you to practice.
⠀
If your primary state of residence participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) and you qualify for a multistate license, that license can give you the ability to practice in other participating jurisdictions without obtaining a separate license for every one.
⠀
Want to work somewhere outside the compact?
⠀
You may need to apply for that state’s license by endorsement before you can start your assignment.
⠀
It can sound intimidating at first, but don’t let licensing be the thing that stops you from traveling.
⠀
When we started, our home state wasn’t part of the compact. We learned how to navigate individual state licenses, and eventually those licenses took us all the way to places like Alaska.
⠀
John gets much deeper into compact versus single-state licenses in the video, including what the process actually looked like for us.
⠀
Your Travel Nursing Agency
Next up is the travel nursing agency.
⠀
Think of the agency as the company connecting healthcare professionals with hospitals that need temporary staff.
⠀
Your agency helps provide access to available jobs, makes sure required credentials and compliance items are in order, and ultimately employs you during your assignment.
⠀
There are a LOT of travel nursing agencies out there.
⠀
And no, you don’t necessarily have to work with only one.
⠀
The agency you choose can have a major impact on your experience, though, so this is one relationship worth understanding before you start submitting to jobs.
⠀
We’ll dig much deeper into how travel nursing agencies work, how to compare them, and what red flags to watch for in the next episode.
⠀
Your Recruiter
Your recruiter works within the agency, but they deserve their own spot on your team.
⠀
A good recruiter helps match your experience and goals with available assignments, guides you through submissions, helps coordinate paperwork, and acts as a liaison between you, the agency, and the hospital.
⠀
More importantly, your recruiter should be one of your biggest allies throughout the process.
⠀
When something goes sideways on an assignment, and eventually something probably will, your recruiter is often the first person you call.
⠀
Finding someone you communicate well with and trust can make a huge difference in your travel experience.
⠀
And Then There’s the Hospital
Finally, there’s the hospital.
⠀
This is where you actually go to play the game.
⠀
Different building. Different policies. Different coworkers. Different supply room you’ll inevitably have to hunt down.
⠀
But underneath all of that?
⠀
You already know how to be a nurse.
⠀
There are still patients to care for, medications to give, doctors to work with, and plenty of things that will feel very familiar.
⠀
That’s one of the things we love about travel nursing.
⠀
The location changes.
⠀
Your skills come with you.
⠀

There’s a lot more happening behind the scenes than we can cover here.
⠀
In this episode of Travel Healthcare 101, John breaks down the entire travel nursing team, including a deeper look at compact and single-state nursing licenses, how agencies fit into the process, what your recruiter actually does, and where the hospital fits into it all.
