How to Choose a Travel Nurse Recruiter (and Spot the Red Flags)
Your travel nursing agency matters.
⠀
But the person you’ll actually talk to, text, ask a million questions, celebrate with, and call when something goes wrong?
⠀
That’s your recruiter.
⠀
A great recruiter can make travel nursing feel a whole lot easier. A bad fit can make an already complicated process incredibly frustrating.
⠀
So how do you find someone you actually want in your corner?
⠀
What Does a Travel Nurse Recruiter Actually Do?
Your recruiter is usually your main point of contact with your travel nursing agency.
⠀
They help connect you with assignments that fit your experience and goals, but their job goes well beyond sending you job listings.
⠀
A recruiter may help you:
Find and submit to assignments
Understand the details of a job
Make requests for shifts or time off
Navigate paperwork and compliance
Coordinate with other departments within the agency
Work through problems during an assignment
⠀
They also get to know you.
⠀
A good recruiter learns what matters to you. Maybe you’re chasing the highest-paying contracts. Maybe location comes first. Maybe you travel with a spouse, kids, pets, or an enormous RV like we did.
⠀
The better they understand your priorities, the better they can help you find assignments that actually fit your life.
⠀
What Makes a Good Travel Nurse Recruiter?
You don’t need your recruiter to become your best friend.
⠀
But you do need to trust them.
⠀
A few qualities matter a lot:
⠀
Good communication. You should know how to reach your recruiter and feel confident that they’ll respond when you need them.
⠀
Knowledge. They don’t need to know absolutely everything, but they should understand the industry and be willing to find answers when they don’t have them.
⠀
Honesty. A good recruiter explains things clearly, including the parts you may not necessarily want to hear.
⠀
Advocacy. Nurses advocate for their patients. Your recruiter should be willing to advocate for you.
⠀
A personal approach. You want someone interested in finding the right assignment for you, not simply getting another traveler placed.
⠀
That relationship can become especially important once you’re hundreds or thousands of miles from home.
⠀
Travel Nurse Recruiter Red Flags
Sometimes you’ll know pretty quickly that a recruiter isn’t the right fit.
⠀
Watch for things like:
⠀
Communication consistently disappears. Nobody can respond instantly all the time, but regularly waiting days for answers can become a serious problem.
⠀
The job isn’t what you were told. Mistakes happen, but if you repeatedly discover that the facility, unit, shift, ratios, or other details don’t match what was presented to you, pay attention.
⠀
They’re pushing you to submit. You should understand what you’re submitting to and actually want the job.
⠀
They give advice outside their expertise. Your recruiter can explain how travel nursing works, but that doesn’t make them your accountant, tax professional, attorney, or financial advisor.
⠀
And one of the biggest?
⠀
You don’t trust them.
⠀
There are too many moving pieces in travel nursing to spend an assignment wondering whether the person representing you is giving you the whole story.
⠀
How Do You Find a Good Recruiter?
You have options.
⠀
You can contact an agency directly and be assigned to a recruiter. You can ask other travelers for recommendations. You can also find recruiters through travel nursing groups and online communities.
⠀
But our favorite method is still pretty simple:
⠀
Talk to another traveler you trust.
⠀
Ask who they work with.
⠀
Then ask why they like them.
⠀
Do they communicate well? Have they helped when something went wrong? Are they transparent about jobs and pay? Have they worked together through multiple assignments?
⠀
A name is helpful.
⠀
The story behind the recommendation is even better.
⠀
And yes, you can work with more than one recruiter or agency. That can give you access to more jobs, although you’ll need to stay organized and avoid being submitted to the same position through multiple agencies.
⠀
